Beyond having a list of Holy Scripture verses that tell us about GOD’s view of health, healing, wholeness, and life, it is important to understand why each particular verse of Holy Scripture matters.
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
In drawing out the meaning of the above verse from the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance it means, in my understanding:
Dearly loved, it is my sincere desire and prayer concerning all things that you succeed in all your endeavors and live in sound health and wholeness; in the same way and to the same extent that your soul and spirit succeed in all things.
This was written by the Apostle John (the Beloved, as he is called) by inspiration of Holy Spirit. This is not just some trifling sentiment expressed by a person ignorant of the WORD and Holy Spirit of GOD to a friend as “well wishing”. This is a sincere statement made by the Apostle who had what was likely the deepest and most profound revelation of the LOVE of GOD. It is quite clear that the Apostle John is expressing the desire (inspired by Holy Spirit) that Gaius succeed in all of his affairs and live in health and wholeness.
The only caveat to this statement is that it would be to the exact same extent that his “soul” would succeed in all things. The definition in the word translated “soul” in this particular instance differentiates itself from just the individual sentience (soul: mind, will, and emotions) and from the individual spirit (breath, pneuma), but appears to me to combine the two together in unity. Thus the requirement for succeeding in all the affairs in life and living in health and wholeness is directly dependent upon and corresponds to (matches to the same degree) the success of the soul and spirit.
How does the spirit succeed? By being made alive through being “born again” as LORD Jesus told Nicodemus. We must first be born again, then our spirit must grow in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and relationship with the LORD GOD Almighty by grace through faith in His Son the LORD Jesus Christ, empowered to do so by being filled with and immersed in (baptized into) His Holy Spirit.
But the soul must prosper also. How does the soul prosper?
Ephesians 4:22-24 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (23) And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; (24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
We must put off the ways of the old man, of our former selves before we were born again, and put on the ways of the new man, the new creation in Christ Jesus that we are born again as.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Have you been born again by grace through faith in the LORD Jesus Christ? If so, then you are a new creature in the LORD Jesus Christ, and just as a newborn must be taught the ways of living life in this world, you (and I) must be taught the Way of living Life in the Kingdom of GOD; the Way of which is plainly laid out for us in the instructions given us in His Holy WORD, otherwise called Holy Scripture or the Holy Bible.
As we grow in the Way of the Kingdom of GOD, we will also grow in success in all the affairs of life, and grow in our health and wholeness–spirit, soul, and body.
Now, some may protest that this particular verse was written directly to Gaius, and does not apply to us today. This misunderstanding will be dealt with in our next verse of Holy Scripture pertaining to health, healing, wholeness, and life.
