A Word Of Encouragement: Start Praying For And With Others, And Keep At It

A couple days ago, at my job working at Family Express on Carrsbrooke and Calumet in Valparaiso, a lady who appeared to be distressed came up to the counter. I greeted her as usual, and asked her how she was doing. I ask pretty much everybody how they are doing, or how their day is going, and I want a real answer. Some people treat the question as just a continued greeting and pleasantry, but sometimes people take advantage of the question (which I want them to do) and give me a real answer.

This particular lady responded by telling me, “I really need your ‘Bless you’ today”. It is my habit to tell people “Bless you” instead of some other parting words. However, when I do, I say “Bless you” with the heart intent of them being blessed by our Abba Father, and not just as a “Good-Bye”.

I asked the lady what was troubling her, and she told me. It is amazing what people will tell you, big or little, when they can tell you are willing to really listen. I told her I would pray for her. Like many people, she was just a touch surprised that I was going to pray for her at the counter, right there and then (when we finished her transaction). I put my hands out, and she took hold of them. To me, this was her sign of faith; however weak or strong it may have been at the moment.

I prayed a prayer of agreement with her concerning peace and wisdom, and revelation of the love of GOD. When we I was done praying, she took a step back, and in front of a few other customers in line who could hear her, stated, “I feel it all over me.”

The Presence of GOD often manifests in some form of confirmation as a wave of peace, or “tingling”, or heat, or a cool breeze from above. It didn’t always seem to, but this confirmation seems to be increasing as I continue praying for people. It is not that we seek such a manifestation, but I believe it is the grace of Abba Father letting people know HE IS listening and paying attention, and that HE IS going to move on their behalf because of His Great LOVE for them.

My encouragement to you is, I am not a trained or educated minister of the WORD Of GOD, nor am I ordained by any organization. I am a child of the Living GOD who has LORD Jesus as my Eldest Brother (the Firstborn of many brethren) Who came as a Living Example of our Father’s Kingdom and how we are to behave in it, and how we are to behave towards and minister to others. I am nowhere close to where LORD Jesus’ Perfect Example is, however, I find that as I step out in faith, even if the one I minister to turns around and seems to throw that faith away (which has happened on occasion), Abba Father honors my step of faith toward Him.

I have been working at Family Express for about 6 months now, and the people who bless us with their business have come to understand that I do indeed care about them. Some have commented that I “pray like a preacher” or that I “should be a pastor”. Well, I am a pastor. Though I am not ordained and have not been educated as such, I am a pastor (shepherd) to all who are kind enough to come into the store I work at (and everywhere else I go). I am there for them. You see, I do not work for Family Express, I work for Abba Father at Family Express. Because Family Express was kind enough to give me employment, which gives me income, Abba Father blesses Family Express for working together with Him by stationing me where I am to shepherd those who come into their store at that location. When the Kingdom of GOD is manifest there—the peace, love, and joy in Holy Spirit—the consistency of the customers increases, and gradually more customers come; increasing business and blessings for Family Express.

The first few times I prayed for someone there was actually a bit of a struggle for me. Feeling embarrassed, and not knowing how it would be received, or if it would be tolerated by Family Express. Our stores have numerous cameras in them for security, and at any time someone in management could be watching and listening to what I am doing, or be reviewing the tapes and watching to see what is going on. Also, if you are not accustomed to this type of ministry, it can be a very scary thing to step out and begin praying for people; especially when you may not see any positive results for a while, or you see inconsistent or even negative results (as I and many others initially have).

I had one gentleman I had talked with and encouraged a few times before I praying for him, after a few weeks, complain that nothing was happening and inform me that GOD has three answers, “Yes”, “No”, and “Not yet”. I had to tell him the truth in love. The WORD Of GOD clearly states that ALL of GOD’s promises are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ Jesus; and that “No” and “Not yet” are incorrect. After making this clear to him, he stated, “Well it’s not on my end!” Meaning the problem of him not receiving any clear cut results must be GOD’s fault. To this I was required to ask him, “Are you accusing Almighty GOD of unrighteousness?” I had to ask him this three times for it to sink in. He went away quite unhappy about our encounter; and this occured in front of 5 or 6 other customers. A few weeks later I saw him again, and he was completely silent during the transaction. This is okay. A few days after this he came to the counter and said, “I don’t know what to do or what is going on, could you pray for me?” This simple act of humility on his part was all that was needed to loose the Lion of the Tribe of Judah to begin to ravage his true (spiritual) enemies, and this can be a very scary thing to us when we understand we have problems in our lives that need to be cleaned up; particularly problems we do not understand, or that have been ingrained in us for some time. I prayed for him to have revelation of the LOVE Of GOD for Him, for GOD’s Will for his life, and for GOD to reveal to him the things that he needs to walk through, deal with, and overcome in his life. Also, for the strength and peace to do so. He went away thankful. It has been about a month since I remember seeing him.

When we pray for others, there are a few things that are absolutely necessary. We must go to Abba Father with whatever faith we have; be it great, tiny, or minuscule. We must go to Abba Father in the Name of LORD Jesus with a true desire to help the one we are praying for, and do so in love (even if that love is currently just a speck of dust in a vast desert). We must pray with humility before GOD and whomever is there when we are praying. Though our prayer may be bold in the moment, our heart attitude must be one of humility, recognizing it is only by the leading of Holy Spirit in our heart that we can pray what needs to be prayed, that it is only by our LORD Jesus Christ that we have the right (and that we also have the authority and responsibility) to approach Almighty GOD on anyone’s behalf, and understanding that the work that will be done is by the power of Almighty GOD our Abba Father; and we are NOT to touch His Glory. We may say, “You’re welcome,” when thanked for praying for someone, but we must always remind them to be thankful to Almighty GOD WHO IS The One who will move on their behalf, and that it is by His Power and His Grace that the answer to their needs will be manifest. All we did was help them approach our Abba Father with their request, their need.

Though it puzzles me at times, I do not always feel led to pray for people with complaints. Sometimes, it seems, they are not really wanting anything done about their problem; or they just may not be ready to have me pray for them.

If I have the thought, “I should pray for them,” I take this as the leading of Holy Spirit encouraging me to offer. I never force or push someone to let me pray for them. Prayer can be greatly personal and intimate to people, and we must respect this.

I did have one time, a couple weeks ago, where I am sure I heard Abba Father say, gently but firmly, “Do not pray for him.” I was a little surprised when I heard this. Later, it seems I was given the understanding that that particular gentleman, at that particular moment would NOT receive prayer even if he agreed to be prayed for; and that he might even hold something against GOD for it. I did not ask Abba Father for the details because I figure it is none of my business unless Abba Father wants me to do something about it and chooses to tell me. It could even be that there is someone else in particular this gentleman needs to minister to him that Abba Father will bring across his path in due time. I simply do not know.

There is a song, Let Us Pray, by Steven Curtis Chapman on his Signs of Life album that has greatly influenced my desire to pray for people on the spot, and continues to serve as a great encouragement.

Here it is as it appears on the Signs of Life CD insert:

LET US PRAY

(1 Thess. 5:17, Col. 4:2, Eph. 6:18, Heb 4:16, Rom. 12:12)

I hear you say your heart is aching

You’ve got trouble in the making

And you ask if I’ll be praying for you please

And in keeping with convention

I’ll say yes with good intentions

To pray later making mention of your needs

But since we have this moment here at heaven’s door

We should start knocking now, what are we waiting for?

Let us pray, let us pray, everywhere in every way

Every moment of the day, it is the right time

For the Father above, He is listening with love

And He wants to answer us, so let us pray

So when we feel the Spirit moving

Prompting, prodding and behooving

There is no time to be losing, let us pray

Let the Father hear us saying

What we need to be conveying

Even while this song is playing, let us pray

And just because we say the word, “Amen”

It doesn’t mean this conversation needs to end

Let us pray, let us pray, everywhere in every way

Every moment of the day, it is the right time

Let us pray without end and when we finish start again

Like breathing out and breathing in, let us pray

Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence

As our prayers draw us near

To the One who knows our needs

Before we even call His name

Let us Pray, let us pray, everywhere in every way

Every moment of the day, it is the right time

For the Father above, He is listening with love

And He wants to answer us so let us pray

Let us pray everywhere in every way

Every moment of the day, it is the right time

Let us pray without end and when we finish start again

Like breathing out and breathing in, let us pray

Our Father which art in heaven

Hallowed be Thy name

Thy kingdom come

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in Heaven

Let us pray.

So I would like to encourage you. Be the awesome Child of GOD you are created to be, and be that one who will love enough to bring others, bring their problems, their wants, and their needs before our Abba Father Who so greatly LOVES them. The more you do so, the easier it will become over time.

And, if you like, email me your experiences at brotherjimpappas@gmail.com.

Let me know if it is okay to share your experiences with others on this site. If you do not expressly do so, they will NOT be shared.

I truly believe that as we Children of Almighty GOD begin to step out in this way, a revival of our nation will begin. Revival won’t start inside church buildings, or inside religious meetings. Revival will start when the Children of Almighty GOD start loving others enough to start bringing them and their needs before the Throne of Grace right where we are when people bring their needs to us. After all, they, without knowing it, are bringing their needs to Christ Jesus in us. So, let’s take them all the way to our Father.

Something else to remember. Even if you pray for people and nothing happens, or nothing appears to happen, the fact that you took the time to connect with them and reach out to Abba Father with them concerning their need is an act of love that most people recognize and appreciate. We need to be willing to “fail” in love, because showing our love for them (as an example of the Love of GOD for them) is more important than anything else we can do. Answers to prayer, and manifestations of those answers and the Presence of Abba Father will come in due time, if we are willing to continue in love, truth, integrity, meekness, and humility before GOD and all His precious people on this planet.

Be blessed.
