A Study Of Psalm 1: Part 10 “…that bringeth forth his fruit in his season…”

Psalm 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

This part of Psalm 1 is, in my opinion, so overlooked and ignored. I believe in so doing we often frustrate ourselves; especially in the modern western culture of wanting everything to happen right here and right now.

…that… (‘asher)

“who, which, what, that”

Here, ” ‘asher ” is translated as “that” to connect the blessed man that “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water” to “bringeth forth his fruit in his season”; implying a continuous thought.

…bringeth forth… (nathan)

“to give”

…his fruit… (periy)

“fruit”

…in his season… (‘eth)

“time”

The “blessed man”, is the person who delights in the Law (WORD) of the LORD, and in His Law (WORD) he meditates continuously. This blessed person is like a tree transplanted from the kingdom of the world, the kingdom of darkness, into the Kingdom Of GOD, the Kingdom of Light; and this person is transplanted into a place of Almighty GOD’s choosing where regardless of how it appears, there are underground irrigation channels purposely prepared for this person to dig his/her roots down into in order to get the nourishment and strength necessary “bring forth his fruit in his season”.

The first thing to note in this part of the verse is that the blessed person gives (brings forth). This psalm says nothing of requiring anything from anyone else in exchange for the giving. To me this implies intentional and purposeful giving; giving that is from the heart as an act of Love. After all, the Law of the LORD, being that GOD IS LOVE, is the Law of LOVE; and the LOVE that GOD IS, is “agape” (agapē, ag-ah’-pay) (the selfless, superabundant, ever generous, feast of Love poured forth for the benefit of others). If this is doubted, then you need only look at the Seed which Almighty GOD planted through His WORD made flesh, His Only Begotten Son, who LOVES us so purely He poured forth His Life on our behalf and did not demand our subservience “or else” but issued the invitation, “You can stay where you are, or you can come, see, follow Me and believe.”

When considering “bringeth forth his fruit in his season”, the modern western mindset often thinks that each person will prepare themselves and bring forth the fruit of their labours. We will bring forth the fruit of our studying, and praying, and fasting, and working. It is as though it is through our great individual effort of seeking Almighty GOD and doing what we believe He wants us to do that we will bring forth fruit when we believe we are ready to step out and do what we think we are supposed to do. Sadly, this view is immature and even selfishly childish, and I believe not accurate in the Kingdom Of GOD at all. More sadly, I have thought this way for decades, wondering why I had not stepped into the ministry I thought I was called to be in, and even at times taught I was called to be in. This is the type of thinking and ministry our LORD Jesus Christ warned us about when He said, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.i

You see, dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, we are not to plant ourselves where we want to be, but we are to allow Almighty GOD our Creator to transplant us where He wants us to be. Too often we look for “better situations” because of the darkness at the place where we work, or because we believe we need more money to provide for our families, or for a myriad of other reasons believe we should “be somewhere else doing something else”, when in truth, we are right where our Abba Father has planted us and has already prepared the unseen irrigation channels we need to dig our roots down into to feed on His WORD that He has designed specifically for us to succeed at what He has created us to do by His Grace and His Holy Spirit.

For decades I was too proud, too arrogant, too ignorant, and too prideful to understand this. Sometimes a brother or sister in Christ Jesus would say, “Perhaps GOD is preparing you.” But after 15, 20, or even 25 years of “preparation, you get a bit tired of hearing this, or being told such things as, “Well, Abram had to wonder for 25 years before he obtained the child of promise,” and “Moses had to spend 40 years in the desert before He was ready,” or “Even Jesus had to be born, grow up, and wait until He was 30 before He began only about 3 years of ministry.”

We must understand, Abba Father is The Ultimate Husbandman, and it is only He that owns the vineyard. It is up to Abba Father Who created us to decide which of His vineyards He wants to plant us in, or whether He wants to add us to a vineyard that appears to be failing and is in need of revitalization, or that He even wants to start a new vineyard in the wilderness somewhere and He wants us to be the first tree planted there, and that by us, the seed of the fruit we are to bear in Christ Jesus causes the vineyard to be fruitful and multiply. For us to be so arrogant and prideful (remember Lucifer who became Satan) that we would dare tell Abba Father where we must be planted, where we must be allowed to work, and where we must be allowed to live, is in actuality living in rebellion against Almighty GOD; regardless of the works we do, and in whose name we do them, regardless of the seeming good we might accomplish. Since it has been done in rebellion and pride instead of love, obedience, and humility, it has not been the work of Almighty GOD, and thus, not the work of righteousness. These works count for nothing, no matter how great and numerous they are; and no matter how many people we have seemed to help or lead to Almighty GOD, it was not the work our Abba Father assigned to us. If fact, in doing so, we likely have hindered the work of others, and even tainted or stolen the fruit they were to bear.

This is something we really need to consider, hence, the warning of LORD Jesus quoted above.

In our mindset the idea of “bringing forth” seems to imply that we have produced the fruit and that we are even the ones who chose where, when, and to whom we will pass “our” fruit out to. This is a gross misunderstanding of the Truth of the WORD Of GOD. In Truth, the words used here tell us we are “to give” with the implication of “yielding” fruit. When we dig our roots down into the channels of Living Water provided for us, choosing whose kingdom we will be fed from, then we will not need to work to bring forth fruit, but that the proper fruit which we were originally created to bring forth will simply be yielded from us; it will simply grow in the proper season, at the proper time.

It is often thought and taught that this fruit is unique to each tree, and that the fruit belongs to the tree it comes from. A pear tree can only yield pears, and an apple tree can only yield apples. We must understand that we are trees planted by Almighty GOD, indwelt by Holy Spirit in the Name of our LORD Jesus Christ, thus, we are spiritual trees reliant upon the WORD Of GOD and Holy Spirit to find and drink from Living Water, we are to grow and mature through various seasons of life, and we are created to produce the fruit of Holy Spirit, not fruit of our own selves. We are to produce His Fruit in His Season (His appointed time). We only choose whether or not to walk in the steps He has ordered for us; if we do, then we will produce His Holy Spirit fruit in His appointed season: if we do not, then no matter how good things may appear or seem to us, we are producing other fruit, and He will only have one thing to say to us, there will only be one conversation to have with Him:

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Let us be ever mindful of Almighty GOD, our Abba Father, His Holy WORD, our LORD Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit. Let us be ever mindful of digging our roots in deeper to drink from His Living Water prepared for us before He ever planted us where He has chosen. Let us seek first, before, and above all other things The Kingdom Of GOD (The Kingdom Of LOVE) and His Righteousness (His Right Way of doing, living, and being) everywhere, at all times, and in all things. Thus, we will be ever following Him, trusting Him to help us place our feet in the steps He has ordered for us in His Paths of Righteousness for His Name’s sake. Then, we will know Almighty GOD – Abba Father, LORD Jesus, Holy Spirit – and we will be known by Him. And in doing so, we will yield, as a regular part of our lives and as simply as breathing the air we are blessed to breath, His Fruit in His Season; the Perfect Fruit that those we encounter so dearly need, Fruit that bears the Seed of Life in it and reproduces His Life in others. This is what we are called to, and this is why we are created. This is how we be fruitful and multiply, filling the earth with His LOVE, His Goodness, His Righteousness, His Peace, and His Joy, that are eternal.
